The Department of Visual Art will present a one person show from it's newest professor, Mr. Nathaniel Allen. Show dates are October 29th through November 17th in the Tullibody Fine Arts Center, Warren/Britt Galleries. There will be a gallery talk by Mr. Allen and an opening reception on Tuesday, November 3rd at 11:am. Normal gallery hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30 to 4:30. The public is invited.

ASU Faculty Gala

Last night the Department of Music presented its Annual Faculty Gala concert. Drs. Joel Jones, Carly Johnson, Walter Bragg, Pamela Burns, Doug Bristol, Katrina Phillips, Gregory Jackson, and Mr. Issaac Bell, Coleman Woodson, III, Bryan Reeves, Joe Ortiguera, and Chato McCormick performed music from the Baroque to contemporary selections.

ART PROFESSOR OFF TO JAPAN

The Department of Visual Arts congratulates Dr. Christopher Greenman on being one of ten ceramic artists world wide accepted to participate in the IWCAT 2009 workshop this summer. IWCAT stand for The International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname - Japan. This prestigious event is in it's 25 year. Dr. Greenman will be living with a host family while participating in this 6 week workshop which will include; visiting local ceramic artists studios; demonstrations of local techniques, work and firing in one of the historic kilns, lectures on Japanese Culture, and field study tours. Again our congratulations go out to Dr. Greenman.

The Department of Music will be hosting its Annual Honor Band & Choir this Thursday-Sunday, April 2-5. Approximately 300 high school students from Alabama and Georgia will come to campus to enjoy a music-filled weekend.

Dr. Doug Bristol's recent activities

Doug Bristol's composition Conversation for Trombone and Timpani was premiered in February by Joshua Hauser and Eric Willie, faculty members at Tennessee Tech University. A video of the performance is posted on YouTube.

His article Using Computer Wave Forms in the Evaluation of Air Control and Articulation was published in the January 2009 International Trombone Association Journal.

He was also a guest artist and clinician at the 2009 Troy Brass Symposium at Troy University.

Interim Chair of the Department of Music, Dr. Caterina Bristol, was a presenter at the annual meeting of the National Association of Schools of Music on November 23, 2008. Dr. Bristol presented on the topic "Recruiting and Retaining Minority Faculty Members."

Music faculty members Drs. Carly Johson, Doug Bristol, Joel Jones, Caterina Bristol and student Lauren Griffin are busy sharing their mucial talents with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's production of "A Christmas Carol."

Dr. Doug Bristol's composition reviewed

Dr. Doug Bristol's Fantasy for Euphonium and Orchestra was recently performed at the International Tuba and Euphonium Association Conference at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. The performance was reviewed by Jerry Young (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) in the Fall 2008 ITEA journal. Below are the highlights of that review:

"Every serious euphonium player should find this work and study it."

". . no audience exists that would not fall in love with this work."

"It is a major work that I hope to see on concert programs with major orchestras."

Visual Arts Graduate Accepted to AISF

2008 summer Graphic Arts graduate, Mr. Kevin Ford, has started his first semester in graduate school this past week. Mr. Ford was accepted at the Arts Institute of San Francisco, but will be starting off his graduate academic career at the east coast affiliate, Art Institute of Pennsylvania, before transferring to the San Francisco campus this spring or summer. The Visual Arts Department offers him their congratulations and wish him the best.

Ms. Charmagne Andrews:
Attended the Tugaloo Art Colony at Tugaloo College in Mississippi for a week long art welding workshop. Participants designed and created individual art pieces using oxyacetylene units to cut the metal and then assemble the pieces using an arc welder.

Stephen Cappelli:
Exhibited in the "Exhibition 1000 Pounds of Alabama Clay" at the Artist Gallery at the Alabama State Council on the Arts, this is a two year traveling exhibition
Participated in the Raiford Gallery’s 12th Anniversary Exhibition in Roswell, Georgia

Dr. Christopher Greenman:
Participated in an anagama wood firing at the University of Montevallo
Exhibited work in an international exhibition in Lake Oswego, Oregon titled “Painting with Fire: Wood Fired Ceramics”
Exhibited work in a national exhibition in Hamilton, Michigan titles “Artful Drinking”
Participated in the Annual American Artisan Fair in Nashville, Tennessee
Conducted a Raku workshop for high school students at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery

Mr. Kevin Patrick:

Music Faculty Member Earns Doctorate

Gregory Jackson, Assistant Professor of Percussion, completed the requirements for and was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa in August 2008. Appointed in 2007-2008, Dr. Jackson teaches applied percussion. Congratulations Dr. Jackson on this achievement.

New Music Faculty

The Department of Music would like to announce the appointment of Dr. Walter Bragg. He holds degrees from Alabama State University, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and the University of Alabama. Dr. Bragg will teach applied piano, music fundamentals, and keyboard. Welcome Dr. Bragg!

Music Faculty Member Retires

The Department of Music would like to announce the retirement of Dr. David Bowman, Associate Professor of Organ and Music History. Dr. Bowman retired August 1, 2008 after over 30 years of dedicated service to Alabama State University. We join with everyone at ASU to congratulate Dr. Bowman on his retirement.
