Presser Scholar

The Department of Music awarded its annual Presser Undergraduate Scholar award to Mr. Omari Brown. The Presser award is presented to a music student at or in their junior year and is sponsored by the Presser Foundation. The award carries with it a $4,800 honorarium.

Congratulations to Mr. Brown.

VISUAL ART ACADEMIC AWARDS

Academic Awards were presented to Visual Art Majors during the 2008 Alabama State University Annual Honors Convocation. This convocation recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their academic pursuits. Art majors who have maintained a 3.50 GPA to a 3.99 GPA were: Vic Daniels, Likita Horton and Teresa Olson. Art Students who maintained a 3.0 GPA to a 3.49 GPA were: Soniael Duncan, Shajuana Pina and Christina Smith. The department Congratulates these students in their success.

VISUAL ARTS SENIOR EXHIBITION PRESENTATION

Graduating visual art majors will be making their final oral presentations to faculty and fellow students on Wednesday and Thursday, the 23rd and 24th of April at 11:00am in the Tullibody Britt and Warren Galleries. The galleries are located on the first floor of the Tullibody Fine Arts Center. Students scheduled to present on Wednesday are: Martez Brunson, Sanyetta Craig, and Danielle James. Student presenters on Thursday are: Kevin Ford, Richard Lott, Teresa Olson, and Ernest Stone. This event is open to the public. Gallery hours are 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

ANNUAL POSTER CONTEST WINNER

Junior Graphic Design major, Carl Varner, was selected as the 2nd place winner in the College Division for the 58th Annual Poster Contest with the Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. He will receive his award, along with other state winners, at the awards ceremony on May 8th at the Capitol City Club in Montgomery. Congratulations to Carl and his Instructor, Mrs. Jackie Webber.

Visual Arts Senior Exhibitions

Seven graduating seniors will be exhibiting and defending their senior projects from April 15th through May 2nd. Students participating are: Martez Brunson, Sanyetta Craig, Kevin Ford, Danielle James, Richard Lott, Teresa Olson and Earnest Stone. A reception will be held on Friday evening the 18th of April from 6 to 8 pm in the Tullibody Fine Arts Gallery. Regular gallery hours are M-F from 9:00 to 4:30. Choral Tour

The Alabama State University Choir returned Monday, March 31 from a Spring Break performance tour. Performances were held at venues in Chicago and Cleveland.

Band Banquet

The Department of Music held its annual Band Banquet on April 1, 2008. The guest speaker was Mr. Van Tony Free, retired professor of percussion and assistant band director. Awards and recognitions were presented to students and staff. Musical selections were provided by Mr. Ron Handy.

Faculty Performance

Dr. Caterina Bristol will be performing at the New Music Festival VII at University of Nebraska, Kearney on April 14, 2008. The New Music Festival is a national conference featuring new music by composers from across the United States. She will be performing Three Profiles for Wood and Metal and Neo Trio with faculty members from Hastings College.

Faculty Performace

Dr. Doug Bristol, ASU Professor of Music, will perform concerts at Columbus State University (Columbus, GA) and Tennessee Tech University (Cookeville, TN) on April 2 and 4, 2008. He will be performing as a member of the trombone quartet, Quatour du Sud. Contact Dr. Bristol at 334-229-4207 for more information.
